Sorry but that's not the case, created an account just recently to provide my input on this issue on another thread. I am 3 iPads down with problems and still hoping the 4th will arrive with no leakage or dead pixels. I'm glad yours is "absolute fine" but if you do a search or just ask around you will find this is a widespread problem

by the same token, its always easier to find the units with issues, if they sell one million units and 5000 of them have an issue thats a % any company would take

The torrented MPEG-4 or H264 saved movies of the Keynotes that I have seen were captured using
screenshot-apps such as Snapz Pro. They usually weigh-in at approx. 160 MB for 90 minutes.

    It usually takes a couple days for these to appear on Bit Torrent networks;
presumably the person doing the recording must wait for the stream traffic to
die down enough to get a clean, uninterrupted stream to work with.

At least that's my understanding of it...

In case you're answering to my previous post, I meant torrent tech directly in quicktime so that you don't connect just to Apple but also to everyone else watching the same movie at the same time. I used a program like that to watch the World Cup Games (streamed TV signal using torrent technology) and even for watching the finale the performance was amazing, we even watched it ona beamer!

Really? Really Nokia? Maybe you should instead stop spending money trying to bring other people down and maybe throw some of that dough into R&D and stop making ****** phones.

anti microbial soap will definitely help, puss and blood are normal though, especially if it gets hit on accident, its a wound so those are part of the healing process. just be careful not to sleep on it, and clean it before and after you sleep especially.

It's January 1st, 2011 on the east coast, so it's time for a new monthly desktop thread!

As per before, ground rules apply.

    Monthly Desktops Guidelines:
    • For large images use [timg] rather than
    • Use attachments when necessary so images don't disappear when they are removed from their source
    • When possible, include links to the full-sized original so others can download them. If you don't want to share, state that in your posts so others don't continue to ask for links.
    • When quoting a post with images, remove the images to reduce clutter
    • Please report any posts you feel need attention by clicking on this icon: .
    • If you would like an original wallpaper I would recommend using TinEye

    Previous Iterations: December (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1057691) - November (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1041375) - October (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1023594) - September (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1005154&highlight=september+desktops)

    Happy new year to all.

Here is my VERY messy desktop attached below :)

    The game has changed :D

A lot of you are a bunch of cheap asses. Most of you don't understand the amount of work that goes into producing these apps. They're not just PDFs that you download and flip through. You get both an interactive version and print version of the the magazine. The reason print subscriptions are so cheap is because they don't really care about print sales. You're paying them to give your information to them so they can use it for marketing purposes. Thus another reason the ipad/iphone version are more expensive is because Apple won't allow them to collect your information. Conde is currently working on a subscription model, but it also how they are going to be able to negotiate with Apple.

I agree with your sentiments on how cheap people are becoming, but the rest of it is a little misguided.

Periodical Business 101: 1) Sell ad space which price is determined by how many copies circulate each week. 2.) Subscriptions guarantee a year of circulation, so these are pushed at cheap prices to help lock in higher advertising rates. 3) News stand prices maybe net 1-5% of their cover if at all in profits as unsold copies are paid for by the publishers but help with circulation which boosts ad rates/revenue. (Just like it costs more than 75 cents to print 1 newspaper) The 1-5% profits that come from non-ad revenue would not cover printing costs let alone paying for your staff and facilities costs.

Why do they want your data? They don't sell your info for money. If they do anything, they simply encourage you to renew, or push you towards other periodicals that they own to keep up circulation. (And anything they know about their subscriber base can help them in content decisions) The newspaper industry has been dying a slow and painful death because... circulation has died with the internet. Magazines are teetering. The publishers would rather you buy a year subscription for $20 a year vs. paying $85 a year buying issues at the supermarket because they actually make more money off of your $20. Guaranteed circulation and no waste. Because magazines sell mostly at a break even or a loss, that's why digital subscriptions are problematic when a 30% chunk is taken away. These companies are all on the endangered species list.

There are a lot of posts about how it costs $1 to print a magazine, etc. but none of those are taking into account expenses beyond printing. Just like people, companies have to pay bills (and people) too.

Those of you with MBs or MBPs with heat issues - get Fan Control Pref Pane.

It works, I have a RavA MBP2Ghz that runs cool to the touch, even when maxxed out running BOINC.

No problems here with the update - beeped instead of flashing lights, then a progress bar, reboot and a dialog box after startup that said the firmware was successfully updated.

My orginal shipping was 4 -5 weeks, after this announcement, the date move from April 22nd to April 21st. One day is not 2 to 3 weeks. Come on Apple. The UK got a better deal than the US.

How many people got to buy the iPad in the UK last week?
    Different not better.

Conde Nast is clueless. Trying to rip people off of course results in low sales. Apple customers are not stupid.

For companies who understand Apple customers, iPad magazines are working out great:

    http://obamapacman.com/2011/04/ipad-subscription-doomed-rupert-murdochs-publications-beat-angry-birds/

I have Zinio and subscribe to multiple magazines on it. It works fine. I don't want a separate app for every magazine that I read. I don't want different controls, different features, different layout, etc. I don't want every magazine "enhanced" with video features in some brave new experiment that I'm funding. I want a PDF of the magazine delivered to me to read. That's what Zinio does (it's an encrypted equivalent to PDF). I want to go to one "virtual" bookshelf and pick the magazine I want to read. That's it.

Conde Nast is having to "slow down" because they've created a damned expensive delivery system instead of using a preexisting thing like Zinio, iBooks, B&N Reader, Kindle, etc. Imagine if every ebook series had its own app!

Exactly. Conde Nast might want to hire some people who understand economics 101, Supply and Demand.

If the bottom half of the device is a touchscreen, you don't have to use physical overlays. You could expand on the concept of the Nintendo DS.

I think the point is to make it tactile. To have buttons that actually push down, sliders that actually slide, knobs that actually turn, etc. The innovation here is that a *lot* of people have thought of 2 different concepts:

    1) Keyboard overlays, where the input device is still a keybard, you're just customizing the functions of the particular keys
    2) Video touchscreen-based interface like the Nintendo DS, early Treos, etc.

The point is, this would have a touch sensitive interface (one big trackpad), and the *physical* overlays would give a tactile feel, but the functionality would actually be engineered and programmed as interactions with this giant trackpad. That's something I haven't seen before and I commend Apple for patenting it.

So I have been to Pierce Ink down in SJ (where I got the surface bar)
Took a few of their business cards, glued one to top my art supply box, also grabbed a few business cards from Fatty Zone(trained at Pierce Ink) in Mountian View, and have also glued it to my art supply box.(promoting the good) Currently carrying around their business cards inside, so if anyone wants to get pierced, I have at least two places that I trust that I can send them to.

I will swing by Body Modifications and Black & Blue Tattoo in SF. if you know that they are professional and reputable and do the same for them too.
By surface bar, do you mean one of the implanted bars that are under your skin? I heard there was a place in SJ that does that, is that Pierce Ink? I soooo want one, but I don't know anyone in SF who does them.

Re: Body Manipulations (www.bodym.com) in SF - they're wonderful! I've had two piercings (nothing major, just ears) and two cuttings done there. Definitely work a stop by if you're in SF.

Re: Black & Blue (www.blackandbluetattoo.com) - I've had three tattoos done there by both of the primary owners of the business. Natalie did a tree frog (which she also drew for me) on the back of my right arm, and Idexa did blackwork moon cycles on my right forearm and a blackwork kitten between my breasts. They're pretty solid, and I've been happy with their work. Also, they're waaaay in to cleanliness and hygene, and just got the interior of the business remodeled.

    Cheers!

What company wimax router do you use and what's the monthly fee?

I'm on UQ Wimax with an NEC A t e r m W M 3 5 0 0 R router. It's a POS really, I keep losing my wifi connection when I have my laptop AND my Android phone(s) connected. But it's so inconsistent, sometimes hours go by before I get an issue, sometimes it happens within minutes.

I only keep it cuz it's fairly stable with just my MBA connected, and because of the amazing 8 hours of battery.

This was plan with no contract, and flat fee for unlimited (actually really unlimited, this is Japan!) data. 4490/month. With contract is 500 cheaper or something, maybe 1000. Can't remember. Device itself was 5100, and activation was another 2-3000.

    Patrix.

So I ordered mine on the 18th when it was a 4-5 week wait. But with the new timelines online, now anyone who orders one now will get theirs at the same time I am supposed to get mine. In fact, I tested it by ordering a second and sure enough, the ship date was only one day later then the one I ordered over a week ago. They never updated people existing ship dates before reducing new orders timelines. Doesn't show any preference to existing orders. Everything I have is Apple, but never run into this much poor translation of information to buy one of their products. Shame to be disillusioned about a brand I've always been a fan of until now. Hello i also order mines on 16th and no change in date for me this is sad i'm sick of this

the most hilarious thing though is that the new slim 360 comes with a "Kinect - port" ... wh-h-what ? so the installed userbase of 30-40 millions is essentially worthless ?... seriously that's such a obvious ridiculous error ... yo ucan't make this **** up

Maybe it uses 2 USB sockets on a regular Xbox? I dunno. They cannot ignore the existing 360 userbase. That'd just be plain silly.

Bummer on the GPU. The 7800 is probably worthless anyways :p

Oh and I did manage to get all 4 clients running the the G5. Trying to figure out the PPD on that?

glad you got the 4 clients working. i think there are a few programs like fahmon that might be able to tell you your PPD. but i'm not sure since that's ppc

Haha...That's just retardid. What Microsoft is doing is not making any sense. "Let's release the Elite model is the US and UK, but leave JP out of the question! Since we aren't doing so well over there, it means that Japanese gamers don't care about our console!" Smooth move. But seriously, it's either a good move, or a bad move. Wouldn't they want to test the market out a little bit in Japan? I think it's still the most important territory to worry about.

Anyway, on the issue of pricing, Microsoft is trying to milk our money with the peripherals. Then the 360...They're not going to drop the price until Sony drops their price, because they're trying to make as much profit as they can since they've got a price advantage. It'll be a while before we see a pricedrop...
