    June?

    Nope. Late fall.

Riiiight. Because the iPhone launches every FALL, not summer. Hey the iPad 2 is coming out in June! And then another iPad, the iPad 3 is coming in the fall too!

A new rumor pops up every day people. I swear some of you would believe the iPhone 5 will perform oral sex if some obscure site wrote a random blurb saying so tomorrow. Use some judgment on what to believe. A new iPhone will come in the summer. Just like every other summer now. This is gonna happen every year, people saying it's delayed for whatever reason and 'this year is differentz!'

    False.

You guys do realize apple has been designing this phone for probably a year and a half at this point right?

Right. The Core 2 Duo's have been out how long...a month perhaps, and Apple is falling behind?

Well, C2Ds have been shipping for that long, and Apple is the only notebook manufacturer who has not even announced! (Lenovo's announcement Monday left Apple as the sole hold-out.)

So, yes, they are "falling behind." (And that's if they announce within the next couple of weeks - if they wait until MWSF, it's just embarassing!)

    :(

This seems pretty exciting, I had to break out my old VHS copy of Pirates of Silicon Valley and watch that over again just to break the excitement.

The life of Steve Jobs is a tragic comedy. The things that he has done, the things he has said, it may seem like the man is crazy, maybe he is, or maybe he has his own demons to battle with. At the time Apple was a young fledgling company, and it was one of the pioneers of a different age, a age where technology was fast becoming a forefront in human evolution. People like Jobs and Gates, they were geniuses, they were scary, troubled, they were cutthroat and they did what had to be down, in their eyes the ends justified the means. It had to be done their way, because the future of technology rode on their ideals. They knew that companies like HP or IBM weren't going the shape the computer revolution, how could they know what people needed or wanted? It was a battle to be fought from garages, computer fairs and with sheer tenacity. Its almost as if they had to openly damn themselves for the betterment of others, every cross they had to bare so we could evolve a little more and a little more. Steve was the cutthroat business man, he rode his employees, has tantrums, he got what he wanted. Bill was the sneaky one, he moved in the shadows, and manipulated others to get what he needed. Both of them did things I doubt they are proud of, but they had to do them.

The whole issue with Jobs health is interesting also, I think this last decade has been part of Steve's last stand with Apple, I think he realized after first being diagnosed with cancer that, he isn't invincible, a lesson all men have to learn eventually and that Apple before has gone without him and lost its way, and he must engrain into Apple Inc's very DNA, the very fabric of its being his mark, himself and thought process. These slew of amazing products are a example of this. I think he figured he had more time, more time to set the peices to the game, The iPad, the iMac, The iPod, Apple Tv, iTunes, iPhone all of these products part of a ecosystem that has to survive without him. I think he must be even more cautious of those he puts within his midsts, those who will follow his ideals about what Apple is and what Apple does. If Apple can continue on its path, without gaining that PC mentality, without loosing its soul, I think that Apple Inc can survive past Steve Jobs. Is it ready? Maybe, its gone without Steve as acting CEO before when he was recovering from his operation, and it seemed to do fine. I don't think we will know what will happen until the day we wake up, get our coffee, sit down to read the news and read those tragic words. "Steve Jobs, Dead."
Personally, I am new to the Mac world, I used alot of them growing up in school, the School district here in Fairbanks has always been a Mac ecosystem, from Macintosh computers back in Elementary, to the Gumdrops, and G5 Power Macs in highschool. The only PC's I remember using was in a web design class in high school. I got my first iMac in the beginning of and loving it, so I hope Apple and Steve Jobs lives a long time to come, and I am really excited for this book.

For the last time.... it's not coming out this year.

    iPad = spring
    iPhone = summer
    iPod = fall

Once a year cycle. Stupid source.

I dunno... Some of the previous rumors that had predicted a 2011 calendar year release had basically considered all the general and speculative points that the article posted today makes. Apple is known to deviate from once a year cycles, and this year both the iPhone and iPad have been rumored at odd times. I find it more plausible that the iPhone is released in the fall and the iPad 3 is a few months later. At any rate, I find the whole idea that Apple would seriously be trying to get its parts from Samsung's supplier (allegedly) rather imaginative.

Despite "high hopes" for going green, the current reality of this is that about 45% of a U.S. Volt owners will be using a coal-powered car.

I don't think anybody here is arguing in support of Coal-fired power plants. We're just saying that this is another issue that needs to be addressed, but it would be foolish to wait for 100% renewable electricity before we start electrifying our fleet. A typical car spends 10-20 years on the road before it's retired. Even if every new car sold from today onwards were electric, it would take 20 years before we have a 100% electric fleet. Currently, expectations run from maybe 3-10% of the market (as in new car purchases) being electric (or at least plug-in) by 2020, depending on who you ask. Fleet electrification will be a very long process, and this can happen parallel with renewable electricity development.

Now, besides this argument, just looking at the current situation and ignoring future potential for improvements, you'll find that even a 100% coal-powered car is more efficient than an equivalent, efficient ICE car (not by a lot, but still better).

Cleanliness is another story, that depends on how you define it. CO2 goes hand in hand with efficiency, as its a direct product of fossil fuel combustion, so again, a 100% coal-powered plug in car is slightly better in this regard. The numbers I've run have shown that NOx and SO2 emissions actually go up with a 100% coal-powered plug in car vs a modern ICE. Those emissions have been drastically reduced in cars over the past 20 years to the point that they're actually quite clean. One thing to consider though is that in this case, these emissions cause local-scale problems, so displacing those emissions away from dense populations actually does help, at least in terms of urban air quality. SO2 can cause acid rain though, and that is maybe somewhere between a local, city-scale problem and a global problem. That said, I don't see why cleaning up coal power plants should be any less aggressive than cleaning up vehicle emissions has been in recent years.

Also, keep in mind that it's very difficult for the power supply from power plants to ramp up and down to meet demand, and as such, a lot of energy has to be burned off and wasted at night when demand is low. That's why some places charge a lot less for electricity at night. If most people use their car to get to work and simply charge up for 8 hours while they sleep, the overall emissions per kWh are reduced, and the numbers swing more in the favour of plug-in vehicles.

This pisses me off. It's a horrible example of decadence and wastefulness. Thing of all the energy and effort that went into making this device. From the mining of the metals to the labour to shipping it across the ocean. The truck that drove it to its final destination. If you've ever given any care to the environment, this should make you mad. Imagine explaining this to someone who has nothing. It went through a long journey. Did nothing. Now it's landfill. Sickening.
There are too many much bigger environmental problems to worry about a guy blending one iPad. Seriously.

Many people seem to worry about the touchscreen thing. How about the apple remote then? Front Row works fine with it (it's still painfully slow but you get my point...). I can see a widescreen video iPod with those (existing) radio remote headphones (with the same controls as the apple remote and the shuffle) that you use just as you use front row. Add an infrared port so you can use the apple remote when your iPod is connected to a TV.

The only downside would be you can't really scroll well... maybe they'll come up with a small-sized clickwheel (basically the apple remote control, except that the outer ring can be used to scroll just like on the big clickwheel).

This may have been said (a few times) before: what if this rumored iPod video device actually works hand-in-hand with the iTV? Meaning, the iPod video could stream content to the iTV (as well as the iTV getting content from your Mac) AND also act as a remote (of sorts) for your iTV?

    That might be neat...

I'm completely baffled. I posted earlier in this thread and got no replies, so I'm even more confused than when I posted the first time. Why is it so out of the realm of possibility that the 5th anniversary of the iPod would be the release date for the "True Video" iPod?

Everyone seems to be ignoring this time as a great release date. Yes it's early, but they could do pre-orders to ship before December.

I'd love to be told I'm wrong in this speculation, but it's the "why" I'm wrong I'm interested in most. No one is mentining this date!

I've believed it since the beginning of the rumors and it is getting more and more rock solid.... there will be NO iPhone.

I think it has gotten to the point that people think it will be out so bad that the rumor has been allowed to live on.

Why would Apple want to get into the cell phone business? I could think of only one good reason... the iPod will not last for much longer unless they add some serious additional functionality to it.

I believe that Apple has more to gain from the "iTV" model plan than going cellular.

Everyone has a TV. Everyone NEEDS a TV. Everyone LOVES their TV. Not everyone needs a cellphone. Not everyone LOVES a cellphone.

Cellphones have become a burden on society. Why do we need to be intouch every second of the day? We don't. Cellphones are the only form of technology out there that actually causes grief for other individuals. Think about it, how many times has the movie you are watching, the dinner you are trying to enjoy or the church mass you are trying to worship at been interrupted by the "lovely" little blaring chime of a cellphone? Or even better yet, that person picking up the call and talking on it as if the person on the other end of the line is more deaf than Helen Keller. How many times has someone cut you off in traffic or almost hit you, only to get a look at them to see that they are gabbing away on their phone, oblivious of the fact they almost killed you?

My family has a TracFone. ONE TracFone. It is to be used when we are out traveling or when someone is out shopping and might need to call back home for something. No conversations are held on it, that's why a have a Verizon bill each month for my home lines. Besides, why would anyone think I would want to hear their conversation with someone about how "Brad is such a dick because he hasn't called me in 3 days. Do you think I shouldn't have slept with him on our first date?"??? ***Real conversation I had the "privilege" of "over hearing" right behind me in my ear one day standing in line at the mall.***

Where are the GOOD rumors. Like about what new Mac Apple is coming out with? Or what new feature the iPod is going to have to blow everyone away again? How about this one, "When is Asteroid coming out???"

I'm tired of iPhone this and iPhone that. Give it a rest people. How long has this rumor been going? Maybe the better part of 18 months? Every single Mac Expo and Convention gets this crappy rumor attached to it and NOTHING HAPPENS.

Ahhhhh.... I feel much better now. Thank you.

    1) Not every conversation I hold on my phone talks about a one night stand.
    2) I don't scream into my cell phone.
    3) I leave my phone at home when I go to church.

You can decide whether your cell phone controls you or if you control your cell phone.

And let's face it: cell phones are EVERYWHERE! People have them. And iPods are EVERYWHERE! People have them, too. And, in my opinion, music players move fast. Portable music players change majorly every 10 or so years. I think the cell phone and iPod are a natural fit. They're things everyone has and uses everywhere. And if Apple can pull off another beautiful, seamless product, then get ready to see as many iPhones as there are RAZRs and iPods combined.

And sometimes, the oldest rumors come true. The Intel Mac rumors have been floating around since 1991, and it became a detested rumor, but it finally came true...

EyeTV has a free service called My EyeTV which resolves the IP. You just need to register with your email address and a password, then within the EyeTV app on the iPhone you enter same and you can connect from anywhere. However, for all this to work you need the EyeTV application running on your Mac.

Similarly, there was a question about accessing your video from a network outside of your home (or whatever), yes, that works as long as you have registered via the My EyeTV service.

Very nice. It looks like anyone on a dynamic IP can use the EyeTV app if they have a compatible router.

Wow! Talk about amazing innovation. I think the ability to have 38 characters engraved on the back of every iPod Shuffle ordered from the Apple Online Store FOR FREE is amazing. Imagine being able to engrave your name and phone number for example:

    Return Reward Tom Jones 555.555.4093

    36 characters

Lot of incentive to buy online to get that free engraving to personalize every one of them. I love it. :)

Also find it amazing and innovative that the audio out headphone jack triples as a recharge and data port as well. Never seen a headphone jack do so much all in one before now.

Oh - I do have a problem with immigration policies too - and I'm not very happy about illegal immigrants either, so don't get me wrong on that, CalBoy. But that is not the immigrants' fault - legal or illegal. It's the politicians' fault, and the EU plays a major role in this (in their backroom-deals with Saudi officials, for instance). I think I mentioned something about the politicians as well in an earlier post, where I stated that they are far worse than the illegal immigrants - I can't really see why this is a "focus on the immigrants".

I personally think you went too far Calboy by calling me and torb racist and xenophobia, after one post. You have no idea how we live life. I'm certainly not scared of other culture's, the fact I work with 85% foreign people. I'm a manager at a large 4 star hotel. Me disliking illegal immigrants (when they come legal because of "human rights") in my country is nothing to do with being racist, even if you saw it like that. We're struggling as it is here in England, yet we spend millions housing illegal immigrants, and paying for their every needs. I know I did say I wouldn't reply, but I really don't feel comfortable being accused of being a racist. Also torb is right, the EU pretty much control us now.

Now you could say, well they are legal now, so why have a problem? the problem, my taxes and what we get back from it. The government has pretty much messed up our country (Labour)

2 week bin collections, schools closing, less emergency staff on, less money for hospitals, etc (the list is really long) Yet we pay for people who illegally enter this country. You tell me if that's right or not?

But yet my friends from india and other countries who work their asses off in hotels, can only stay here for a year or 2 on a work visa, then their applications get rejected and they can't stay in the UK, why is that fair??? I've seen many GOOD friends go because the government are to stupid to sort the stupidness out.

I believe actually that we're about to see not a replacement for the existing iPod but more of an iPod Pro. They won't call it that but it will the newest in the lineup, with the current 5.5G iPod continuing selling.

I see Apple continuing selling the current version for $249 and $349 and then offering this bigger brother for $449 and would come with the screen the full length of the iPod as we have seen countless mockups. Would it have more than an 80GB drive? Possibly. But I think we'll just see one model with the bigger screen and it might have a bigger hard drive.

I would bet, though, that Apple does not get rid of what's been working for them. The 5.5G is safe... for now.

    Agreeed.

    Here is the line-up
iPod schuffle <-- should read Shuffle (thanks Chundles -- see 3 posts down...)
    iPod nano
    iPod
iPod X (X being a real cool marketing name)

the iPod X will be the 'True Video iPod'

The entire Western civilization has been in the 3rd phase for quite a while, don't you think?

Yes I agree. What do you think the decline has been attributed to?

EDIT: Perhaps the author has already answered my question -

Today, three main threats exist to America’s dominant position in the global economy: loss of economic clout thanks to a shrinking share of world trade, the decline of American technological innovation, and the end of the dollar's privileged status as the global reserve currency.
