Ever see the cartoon where the elephant fell off of the cliff and is holding on by a single petaled daisy? Nokia and Microsoft fit those images to the tee.

Remember what I said earlier about the earthquake in Japan causing parts constraints for the new iPhone 5--if the earthquake had not occurred, it's likely that the iPhone 5 would have been formally introduced at WWDC and will hit retailers in early July 2011.

But now, since Apple will need to scramble for alternate parts suppliers, Apple will now likely turn WWDC into a show previewing the final version of MacOS X 10.7 ("Lion") and possibly introducing to the public for the first time iOS 5.0, which may have a heavily revamped interface.

Don't be surprised that Apple--with its revamped release schedule--will now schedule a really big press event as Moscone Center in San Francisco in either the third or fourth week in September 2011 to unveil not only the 5G iPod touch, 7G iPod nano and (maybe) a new iPod shuffle, but the new iPhone 5. The event will (in my opinion!) also mark the public rollout of iTunes 11.0 and iOS 5.0; indeed, the 5G iPod touch will come with iOS 5.0 already loaded.

Humans that can survive on their own without depending on others.

Even if we're proudly self-reliant and self-employed, we depend on customers and the society they belong to.

Without them, we're back to being hunter-gatherers and dying in our late twenties from some minor ailment like an infected wound or a parasite picked up from drinking contaminated water.

No Woodcrest arcoss the board in the Mac Pros? BOO HOO!!! I hope the new monitor rumor is true. I am eyeing up a nice 23" monitor to go along with my new (Woodcrest based?) Mac Pro.
What's wrong with having lower/middle-cost Mac Pros, as long as we ALSO get the Woodcrest you dream of? (And me... but with Kentsfield due this year now--quads-on-one-chip--I may just wait for that.)

All these rumors sound good to me--I hope even half of them are true (even if they happen later than WWDC).

I want to see revolutionary, fricken awsome, Vista-crushing, earth shaking features, a totally revamped and polished GUI, Enterprise features, etc. Come on Apple! Don't dissapoint me!
Earth-shaking revolutions are fun--I'd love that too--but you can't count on that, and OS X is a great OS already. I always seem to appreciate each release's hundred LITTLE improvements most of all.

I guess I'll be pre-ordering one of these tomorrow since my 360 is still MIA. Gives the cops a month to track it down. If I don't have my old one back by then, I'll grab the Elite.

Doesn't seem that bad a deal since it comes with an HDMI cable and the new 120 gig HD will retail for $179. The black color will also match most of my electronics (except for the Wii).

    Ahh, that makes sense.
I have no problems with Sleep issues or Booting...Should I really run the firmware update? I really don't want my system running any hotter then it already does.

I'm the same, I don't think I'll run the update. As the saying goes "if it aint broke, don't fix it."

The iPhone 3GS can only be downgraded if you had saved a 'security blob' (think of it a digital fingerprint of your device and its OS) from it before you upgraded it 4.x.

I'd only like to go to 4.2.x as it was perfect then. Appears I can't as I didn't save that blob thingy.

Thanks anyway but guess I'll be switching to Android now.

December's actually later than I was expecting. I was fully expecting a big release for the iPod's 5th birthday (later this month).

Very good point. How long before a media event does Apple usually send out invites? If the 5th anniversary is October 23rd and the possible launch for this anniversary then we shoul be hearing about it soon. Pure speculation of course but it would be cool.

Now, I don't care who does and who doesn't have Thanksgiving Day -- the point is December would be to late for a lot of people to add an iPod video to their shopping list and Apple would get a lot of returns from those who bought a 5.5g for hte kids.

I don't think Apple is delaying the annoncement for any other reason other than they are unable to iron out some production problem or another -- I am sure if it were ready the iPid video would be out ASAP. Now timing is an issue with a MWSF announcement (next to revamped MBP and a new Mac Tower (something between an mini and a Pro) and availability not long there after.

    Well, I hope...

I'd get the New Yorker in a minute if it was even remotely priced the way it would be for a print subscription. I'd pay even more--due to the convenience factor, but not $5 an issue.

The demand is not there because their prices are unrealistic.

I downloaded one issue after I got my iPad 2. It's a beautiful app -- functional, readable, decent multimedia, feels like the New Yorker brand, etc. -- but $5 a week is WAY too much.

The iPad-optimized Safari version is not completely awful, but I'm probably not going to continue it after the four-week free trial. It's basically a PDF version of the magazine but is clunkier and less readable than a PDF.

I cancelled my print subscription a couple of years go because the pile got too high, but I would get an iPad subscription if it wasn't more than $60 or $70 a year.

Unfortunately, GAS TAX is way too scary a concept for any sane politician to touch with a 10-foot pole.

Lol, just as I was posting this, Autoblog put up this article:
Democrats and Republicans agree on higher gas taxes, just not in public all the time (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/12/03/democrats-and-republicans-agree-on-higher-gas-taxes-just-not-in/#continued)

here's a quote from the article:
"You know who else has apparently been for higher gas taxes? Ford CEO Alan Mulally and Ford chairman Bill Ford, former General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner, former Chrysler CEO Tom Lasorda. And, hold on to your hats... George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.

According to two sources who were in the room in a March 2007 meeting with Detroit CEOs, Bush and Cheney both agreed that while higher gas taxes were a good idea for both deficit reduction and driving the sale of high fuel economy vehicles, they ultimately dismissed such moves for political, not rational, reasons. And neither would admit to supporting it in public."

It appears the new Shuffle is not getting the new improved headphones. It was not specifically mentioned in the presentation today (unlike with the regular iPod and Nano), and pics at the Apple store show it with the older design. But the new headphones are sold separately for about $30. If they are indeed improved, seems like a must to me, but the extra expense pushes the price above $100. Very disappointing Apple's not replacing them across the entire line.

So what happens when the might of Apple comes crashing down on you - public execution at dawn?!

I would assume the execution has already happened. That's what the fandroids would tell us. They're always right, you know.

Ahem. Anyone who says that Yale is "square" and Harvard is not has obviously never experienced the two colleges. And yes, I can say this because I am a Yale student who chose Yale over Harvard. Additionally, I really don't know what a "more comprehensive understanding of aesthetics" is, let alone what it has to do with mac usage. And, for the record, fully 35% of people here at Yale use Macs, and the large majority of freshmen I know who bought a new laptop got an MB or an MB pro. Also, I would argue that trying to paint Yale and Princeton with the same brush is also incorrect, and it is even more incorrect to paint Harvard and Columbia with the same brush. It is pointless to generalize ANY two colleges together, especially schools with such varying social, educational, and cultural philosophies.

EDIT: Oh, but don't take my word for any of this. I switched to Mac from Linux, so I guess I'm not a real Mac user.

    Bravo.

Exactly, it is just a brand of computer... a tool if you will. Not a bloody religion which changes your whole mindset and world view to the point that you are prepared to strap bombs to your chest to "defend" it.

Switcheur... people who use this world sound more like poseurs to me if they honestly think the few extra grand they spent in their lifetimes on macs make them superior in any sense. Stop hiding behind Steve's skirt and go get a real peen enlargement you loser

Phil Schiller is such a bad presenter.

And yes, you are seeing a transfer of power here - whether Steve is sick only he knows I guess.

I'm not going to speculate as to Steve's health. It's bad karma and I wish him perfect health for his family and friends, not for Apple and its customers.

I am responding to this post only to put some balance into the thinking here.

One thing everyone seems to be forgetting--or doesn't know--is that succession planning is very common in large companies, especially with "older" CEO'S.

A VERY likely scenario, regardless of Steve, is the board realized too much of Apple's identity was tied into one person. A good board would ensure that Apple will exist long after Steve's retirement. So, it is not surprising to see more of Apple's executive team being profiled.

Steve could be in perfect health and plan to stay at Apple for another decade or two. Today's performance on stage, changing Apple from a one-man-show to a show by a world class team of executives is simply smart business which will help ensure the longevity of Apple.

Now, I do acknowledge after Steve's scare, Steve and Apple's Board probably accelerated the succession planning process. This is simply smart business and the responsibility of the Board and CEO.

But what you saw today doesn't necessarily mean anything other than smart business. Sure, I could be wrong, and for the sake of Steve and his family I pray that I am not. But let's not be so quick to assume the very worst.
