Whitney Cummings

They brainwash women. They make us believe in like, fate and destiny. Fate and Destiny are the names of strippers, okay ladies? They don’t really exist.

Whitney Cummings will be playing Whitney on NBC's Thursday night TV this fall..aka WHITNEY.

You cannot defeat a woman in an argument, right. It has never happened because women never express the emotions they are actually feeling. When we are pissed off at you guys what do we say? ‘I’m fine.’ I’m fine means I’m about to stab you in the neck.-Whitney Cummings

Does she have what it takes? Lets, see...She's been on Comedy TV, WHY MEN GO GAY IN L.A., Live Nude Comedy. And movies, too...Made of Honor, Grizzly Park and soon to be in...Frankie Go Boom.

"If porn was made for women it would be two hours of snuggling then, at the end the guy would propose."

Was named one of Variety's Top Ten Comics to Watch in 2007.

The first female comedian to perform in Dubai and Beirut.

If you get breast implants you’re just going to attract the wrong kind of guy. Every guy in an Ed Hardy shirt is going to want to talk to you. Is that what you want?

And a college grad from Pennsylvania. She's from Washington D.C.

Johnathon Schaech

You might ask yourself, who in the world in that fellow in your header?

Well, that guy used to be married to Christina Applegate. Then they divorced around 2005 and he got married again. But that marriage didn't last so long with ONE TREE HILLS' Jana Kramer.

He was the it guy in the 90's. With that Harry Connick Jr. smirk and oh so devious looks, he showed he was more than just a model. And he did model. A member of the of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and coached in acting by the legendary Roy London. Now, Jon is active in TACA (Talk About Curing Autism).

There was a time he was voted as the sexiest vampire. You might have caught him in THE FORSAKEN with Brendan Fehr back in 2001. He was the most wicked vampire in this so called cult classic.

But if you want to see him in indie action, you've got to see him as Xavier in Doom Generation. He was such a breakout character. Funny, to think he could be in THAT THING YOU DO that Tom Hanks directed. Yeap, Johnothan's got acting skills.

Recently, he was the bad stalker in PROM NIGHT. Maybe that's where you know him from.

John is a writer, producer and director. You can look for him in new movies like Love Letters in the Sand, The Book of Matthew, Dark Circles, ChromeSkull: Laid to Rest 2, Hidden Moon, 5 Days of War.

Kaboom - DVD review

Nobody could wear this like Juno Temple

This is an IFC film. Also another WHY NOT production which Gregg Araki has been a part of since at least 1995. Yes, Araki is strictly indie. He is not mainstream. Once upon a time he made a pilot for MTV for a show THIS IS HOW THE WORLD ENDS, and well, it didn't get very far.

Juno, Thomas & Haley
Duval really hasn't changed much since Doom Generation. & to think in real-life he's a yoga expert.
Let the right one in with Brennan Mejia

Araki is possibly misunderstood. Some get him. Some would probably forbid themselves to witness his 90210 genre on acid. But still, Araki is sharp, dark witted and perhaps too deep for his own good. Or on the other hand, some would say he's definitely shallow. But young Hollywood loves to be in his movies. He can  take an ABC Family favorite and turn him into a monster. That's the way Araki does it. Along the way, one might wonder to if James Duval is his muse. He was in his 1995 Doomed Generation. Even still, Duval has a certain vibe that is possibly the real Gregg Araki, even in Kaboom as Messiah.

Haley and Roxann

Araki usually makes his females bitter and angst. Yet, this time around he brings out the best in Haley Bennett as Stella. Sure she's got her own problems with her lesbian witch girlfriend, Roxann Mesquida who is ever so Eva Green in this film. Still Stella is there for her bestie Smith(the main character) played by scruffy Thomas Dekker.

Its a college movie exposing the slick dark side of University life in a hipster's world ...that just might go TO FAR. Smith would like to find that perfect boyfriend, but somewhere along the way, that physical stuff takes over when he meets Juno Temple's London. But then there is Jason Olive who he meets at the beach. And of course his roommate Thor played by the sex god, Chris Zylke, who might be the dumbest dude around..or not. Needless to say, Gregg knows how to find beautiful people.

This film is full of sex, drugs..and crime. Naturally, its a downward spiral of everything. Possibly it just went KABOOM in Smith's head. It would have been wonderful to actually see a full blown romance bloom..just once with the right person in a Araki film. I so loved Brennan Mejia as Oliver. But as usual, this sort of character plays only a bit part in Araki's films. I do hope he gives Mejia a chance to be in at least another film. Honestly, I think he could be his next James Duval of Araki's dark world. But then again, I'm possibly the only one who noticed this. Araki has a way of showing such hipster style, yet so real and mysterious.

Anyway, best not to read too much into Araki's films. He takes you on a ride into a world that you'd only want to visit and never actually want to be a part of.

an Araki moment

STORYLINE: Smith's everyday life in the dorm - hanging out with his arty, sarcastic best friend Stella, hooking up with a beautiful free spirit named London, lusting for his gorgeous but dim surfer roommate Thor - all gets turned upside-down after one fateful, terrifying night.

Hey Champ

I accidentally found this band when I noticed Sam Earle (from Degrassi) twitted about having a romance with his math and had to listen to COLD GIRL DUST(via tumblr). I've been hooked, ever since.

Hey Champ comes out of Rockford which is close to Chicago. They are made up of Saam Hagshenas (Vocals, Guitar), Jonathan Marks (Drums)and Pete Dougherty (Synths). Who would have thunk it? These guys could have been lawyers.

"Their music incorporates influences from disco, house and indie rock to the power-pop of Rockford’s hometown heroes Cheap Trick and the synth-heavy productions of Giorgio Moroder and Trevor Horn. Their infectious sound has garnered fans and made them blog and radio darlings from Portland to Paris to Porto Alegre." says last.fm.

Back in May they released the EP, Anything At All.

SPIN magazine is naming them “Best Discovery of Lollapalooza”

Non-Fiction Tuesday - A Jane Austen Education

BECOMING JANE

If you haven't gotten your Jane Austen fix yet, you might want to find out what insightful William Deresiewicz has to say on the subject of Jane and all her novels.

Deresiewicz was an associate professor of English at Yale University until 2008 and is a widely published book critic. His reviews and essays have appeared in The New York Times, The New Republic, The Nation, Bookforum, and The American Scholar. He was nominated for National Magazine awards in 2008 and 2009 and the National Book Critics Circle's Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing in 2010. So yeah, this guy has clout  and honestly, he makes the book rather interesting to dive into by sketching and comparing his own college days to Jane Austen. You can seriously learn a lot from a gal of simpler times.

DESCRIPTION: In A Jane Austen Education, Austen scholar William Deresiewicz turns to the author's novels to reveal the remarkable life lessons hidden within. With humor and candor, Deresiewicz employs his own experiences to demonstrate the enduring power of Austen's teachings. Progressing from his days as an immature student to a happily married man, Deresiewicz's A Jane Austen Education is the story of one man's discovery of the world outside himself.

A self-styled intellectual rebel dedicated to writers such as James Joyce and Joseph Conrad, Deresiewicz never thought Austen's novels would have anything to offer him. But when he was assigned to read Emma as a graduate student at Columbia, something extraordinary happened. Austen's devotion to the everyday, and her belief in the value of ordinary lives, ignited something in Deresiewicz. He began viewing the world through Austen's eyes and treating those around him as generously as Austen treated her characters. Along the way, Deresiewicz was amazed to discover that the people in his life developed the depth and richness of literary characters-that his own life had suddenly acquired all the fascination of a novel. His real education had finally begun.

I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book!  When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.“  Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen

Weaving his own story-and Austen's-around the ones her novels tell, Deresiewicz shows how her books are both about education and themselves an education. Her heroines learn about friendship and feelings, staying young and being good, and, of course, love. As they grow up, they learn lessons that are imparted to Austen's reader, who learns and grows by their sides.

A Jane Austen Education is a testament to the transformative power of literature, a celebration of Austen's mastery, and a joy to read. Whether for a newcomer to Austen or a lifelong devotee, Deresiewicz brings fresh insights to the novelist and her beloved works. Ultimately, Austen's world becomes indelibly entwined with our own, showing the relevance of her message and the triumph of her vision.

"Like a lot of men, I thought Austen was chick lit: soap-opera romance, fluffy and boring.  When a friend of mine heard I was writing this book, he said “I expect a lot of sex and dating advice.” It was an understandable assumption, and my friend’s, no doubt, was based on all those movies—the ones with the beautiful gowns, and the beautiful homes, and the beautiful actresses. The ones with all the swoony music and the lush, romantic lighting, the ones that leave out everything that Austen had to say to us except the love—and then, don’t even get the love part right." Deresiewicz says about Jane and her writing.

This nonfiction piece gives some new insights you might enjoy other than having to write a paper on Jane's works.
BBC's EMMA

I doubt it’s being very clever myself,” said Mr. Weston. “It is too much a matter of fact, but here it is. - What two letters of the alphabet are there, that express perfection?”
“What two letters! - express perfection! I am sure I do not know.”
“Ah! you will never guess. You, (to Emma), I am certain you will never guess. - I will tell you. - M. and A. - Em -ma. - Do you understand?

Friends with Benefits - movie review

This film does have a lot going for it. First, two hot young actors. Then there is Patricia Clarkson as (Milas Kunis) Jamie's mom. And award winning actor Richard Jenkins as (Justin Timberlake) Dylan's Dad. So what's the problem?

Perhaps too much TMI about Jamie and Dylan's relationship that's physical. Oh, a laugh, maybe here and there. Yet, Kunis comes off a bit bitchy, but then again, she's a 'headhunter', which I have to wonder if they are as popular in New York City, as they used to be. Its just here we have a story about two people in high powered jobs that can't find love. And yes, it seems to be a cliche. But when you look at our economy at the moment, well, who cares about people like that? Everybody is thinking the simplicity of life. Just wanting a job. So I can't say this was the perfect timing for a movie with characters like this. On the other hand, you might be thinking..a great time to escape our troubesome woes. Its a cute movie.

Granted, its a bi-coastal film. Some beautiful landmarks to pull you in. Woody Harrelson as the gay sports editor that Timberlake works with is a bit harsh. Actually, harsh is the word I think of, watching this film. Still it wasn't too awful. Although, Clarkson comes off a bit cliche too as Jamie's mom who just can't seem to get her act together, yet still comes off amazingly radiant with a very cool wardrobe. Perhaps the real answer to Jamie's problem..is... she needs to find her Dad. But it might be an undertaking to find someone to fit that role.

So, these two get it on..in bed..His place. Her place. Then Jamie decides she wants to start dating again. This isn't exactly what Dylan wants to hear, but he makes light of it. Dang, if Jamie doesn't find a dude in the park. As if you'd want to get a date with a stranger in the park? But this is none other than Bryan Greenberg, a doctor no less. Of course, its a relationship that feels so perfect, and yet it fizzles. No one seems to know why. Of course, Jamie is used to this happening. Still Dylan is Jamie's friend, to cheer her up, he takes her home for the 4th to meet his folks. And you think, this is the moment they figure out..they are in love. But oh no..they are just too smart for that.

This film doesn't have the quirkiness of NO STRINGS ATTACHED. No one said that movie would work, either. But it did. I'm not saying this film is a failure. Because you will find some laughs. And if you like Flash Mobs..well, here you go. Also one of my favorite songs is in the film, Closing Time. The soundtrack is pretty good. There is a lot of interesting things about the movie. Yet there is something smug about this film too even if it is sort of cute.

STORYLINE: While trying to avoid the clichés of Hollywood romantic comedies, Dylan (Timberlake) and Jamie (Kunis) soon discover however that adding the act of sex to their friendship does lead to complications.

P.s..they made fun of it in the movie..but there was no better FWB than Seinfeld's Elaine and Jerry...and you know how that ended.

Charlie St. Cloud - dvd review

I debated if I really wanted to review this movie.

1. its very Nicholas Sparks even if he didn't write this.
2. a very romantic twisted love story.
3. you gotta have faith of some kind while watching this tear jerker.

Saying all this...Zac Efron did show his sensitive side. Honestly, are there real big brothers out there like that in the world? In a sense, this was a bit of a ghost love story. Yes, there are a few twists and turns in the story. Which might lead you to believe you were watching something like the Uninvited, which really makes you so peeved in the end.

On the upside, its a beautiful movie, scenic wise. And if you are deep in work and no way to get away to the north west coast, this might be the movie for you. And again, the movie showed that Efron was capable of being something more than a KEN doll.
I love Allister in the move played by Augustus Prew

Oh..and there is Augustus Prew who just isn't in the film enough. I did love his zany 'mate' who works with Efron's character in the grave yard, who might be the one who really knows what's up with Charlie. Seriously, why couldn't have Efron's character fall in love with him?

Anyway, its a very romantic movie. On one hand you can make light of it and smile and think, Zac Efron can talk to dead people. Or, lets get down to some nitty gritty here, this fellow could have been schizophrenic and no one bothered to even care what sort depression he was going through.

Ray Liotta plays a wonderful part in the film, but I won't give it away. Amanda Crew as Efron's love interest shows she knows what to do on a sail boat. And who couldn't love Charlie Tahon as the little brother Sam?

Funny, how this movie could have been a horror film with all its twist and turns. But its not.

STORYLINE: Charlie St. Cloud is a young man overcome by grief at the death of his younger brother. So much so that he takes a job as caretaker of the cemetery in which his brother is buried. Charlie has a special lasting bond with his brother though, as he can see him. Charlie meets up with his brother (Sam) each night to play catch and talk. Then, a girl comes into Charlie's life and he must choose between keeping a promise he made to Sam, or going after the girl he loves.
